It's true. I consider myself very fortunate. I've worked hard in my career to the point I make a pretty good living. For that, I don't make excuses. I did build that.
I also am fortunate to have my health, a great wife, two wonderful healthy daughters, and family members who live close by that I can turn to, even if it's just for a Sunday afternoon visit.
Like I said...I consider myself very fortunate.
I haven't lost sight of the fact that right here in Fort Smith, there are a LOT of people a LOT less fortunate than myself. And I met one of those yesterday. After I turned off the mic yesterday I headed out for lunch on a postcard type of day. A day they call a Chamber Of Commerce or Department of Tourism type of day. Outside the restaurant I encountered one of those people less fortunate than me. As I always do, I offered him a couple of bucks, but as they never do, he said "I don't want your money, but if you don't eat everything you order, I would sure take what you have left." I really found that refreshing. Someone who really did want something to eat, not to take my money and go buy something that really wasn't good for him. I asked him what he thought I should get, hoping he would tell me what he likes, because I knew I would end up wanting to order him something, not having him take my leftovers. He did say "I heard the chicken sandwich here is pretty good".
So I enjoyed my lunch, ordered a chicken sandwich to go and walked out. I told him I wasn't as hungry as I thought and gave him his meal. I also asked If he would mind if I hung out and talked for awhile. He said "be my guest" and I was for the next twenty minutes. I found out about his family that he has become estranged from, the time he spent in the military and two or three jobs he used to have. He had a really great story and I had a really good time getting to know him.
I'll probably find myself going back next week and yes, I will hope he is there. Because let's face it, friends have to stick together.
