34 years in this business has taken me to some great places across this country. Rockford, IL, Aberdeen, SD, Stevens Point, WI, Kansas City, MO, Anchorage, AK, Dallas, TX, Enid, OK and now Fort Smith.
Figuring out the return policy is the easy part for many of you. How to tell your loved one you didn't like their gift, that's a bit tougher.
What if you unwrap a brand new deep fryer but you just went vegan? Or your aunt gives you a crock pot, but its a little too small? What if your grandmother gives you yet another George Foreman grill? What is the proper gift return etiquette?
Local etiquette experts were unavailable, but the last minute Christmas shoppers at Shopko had invaluable insight on how to deal with unwanted gifts.
First, figure out who gave you the gift.
"If it's your mother-in-law," says Shopko manager Dale Adams,"I would keep it even though I didn't like it and I would make sure it's displayed prominently in my home."
Always say thank you. "Smile and don't be nasty," says one shopper laughing. Give the gift giver a gift - of tough love.
"Now if it's from your brother or sister I'd just return it and tell them next year you better figure out what I really want," says Adams.
Shopper Nick Hermsen says he would add, "I ain't gonna ever do anything with this! What did you get me this for, ya know?"
